Golden Bears' Comeback Ends Pacers' ECAC Run

Alfred, NY - Western New England University came back from a three-goal halftime deficit to end Marywood University's record-breaking season with a 14-12 victory Saturday in the ECAC Division III men's lacrosse semifinals. The top-ranked Golden Bears move on to face host Alfred University in the championship game Sunday, while the Pacers finish their season with a 12-6 record.

The Pacers led 8-5 at halftime. Western New England outscored the Pacers 9-4 in the second half. The Golden Bears scored five straight goals over a 14-minute span to turn a 9-7 Marywood lead into a three-goal Golden Bears' lead with nine minutes remaining.

Brandon Terlizzi scored a season-high six goals and an assist for six points, in addition to four ground balls. Cody Bachman added two goals and an assist for three points.

Dylan Swope finishes his Marywood career as the school's all-time scoring leader with 181 points. Heading into the game tied with Sam Trill at 178 points, Swope totaled a goal and two assists. Trill added a goal of his own to finish his career second in program history with 179 points.

Seniors Alexander Fallek, Brandon Terlizzi, Dylan Swope, Brian White, Sam Trill, John Werner, Ryan Nowell, Joe Magargal, Taylor Goldson, Brian Madine, Michael Squillante and Jarrod Bulger in playing their final game in forest green and gold.

Michael Squillante won 11 faceoffs and had a team-best five ground balls. Slater and Bachman each had four ground balls.

Leading the nation in save percentage heading into this week, Joe Magargal took the loss after making 15 saves and allowing 14 goals.

Western New England won the ground ball game by a 37-27 ratio. The Golden Bears out-shot the Pacers by a 49-40 margin. Marywood was successful on all 16 attempts.

After eight scoreless minutes, Marywood finally put an odd number on the scoreboard when Bachman scored off a Scott Slater feed. Just 17 seconds later, Skyler Swope found the net from a Ryan Nowell pass. Following the Golden Bears' first goal, Terlizzi pushed the Pacers lead back to two with 4:35 left. Dylan Swope closed the first period with a goal to finish with a 4-2 lead.

Marywood and Western New England traded goals three times in the second, and Stephen Deiner ended the half with a goal at 1:54 for the Pacers' largest lead of the game. Marywood went to halftime with an 8-5 lead.

Halftime adjustments worked in the Golden Bears' favor; Mike Jednak and Mike Fiocco opened the half with back-to-back goals to slim the deficit to just one. Terlizzi tacked on Marywood's only goal of the third period at 6:44, but Justin Bard came back with a netter for the Golden Bears, halving the Pacers' lead to 9-8 entering the final stanza.

The fourth period didn't change the Pacers' fortunes. A string of three periods with just one combined penalty was spoiled with a pair that led to Taylor Dubose's man-up goal to even the score for the Bears 75 seconds into the quarter. Less than two minutes later, Jednak added the first of three unanswered goals to give Western New England its first lead of the game.

Terlizzi ended the 14-minute scoring drought with a goal at 7:28 to put the Pacers in arm's reach again at 12-10. The Golden Bears kept the Pacers from gaining any momentum, their lead enjoying a two-goal cushion. Terlizzi and Bachman's late goals were met with Western New England tallies.

Marywood finishes its season with a program-best 12 wins.

Alfred defeated Richard Stockton 10-6 in the other semifinal.
