Women's Soccer Ends Season in ECAC Quarterfinal

Women's Soccer - 11/7/2012 8:45:00 PM

Box Score

Swarthmore, PA - Host and second seed Swarthmore College used an early goal in each half to down visiting and seventh seeded Marywood University in ECAC Women's Soccer South Region Quarterfinal action Wednesday evening in Swarthmore.  The Garnet improve to 13-6-1 and advance to Saturday's semifinal round while the Pacers close their season at 10-9-1.

Swarthmore withstood two early shots, one coming from the foot of Siobhan Blancaflor and the other from Lauren Eck, before breaking in behind the Pacers' defense and creating a 1v1 situation versus Marywood goalkeeper Emily Osborne in the 7th minute of play.  Despite reading the play well and making a great effort, Emma Sindelar touched the ball around Osborne towards the center of the goal, then cut back to beat a recovering Marywood defender before touching it into an open net.

The score would remain 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.  Swarthmore held a slight 10-8 advantage in shots in the opening frame and had three corner kicks to Marywood's none at intermission.

In the second half, the Garnet would again jump out and score early, this time 1:25 into the period.  A Swarthmore player crossed the ball in behind Marywood's defense and Amber Famiglietti took the ball to the left corner before slotting a perfectly timed ball to an on-coming Aly Passanante, who touched it home for her fourth tally of the season.

Marywood held a 7-3 advantage in shots for the second half and a slight 15-13 advantage for the game.  Late in the game and down 2-0 it appeared Marywood would get a penalty kick after Emma Nye made a beautiful move to get inside the 18 but was taken down but the whistle never came.

Emily Osborne made seven saves for Marywood while Reba Magier made seven stops for the Garnet.  Swarthmore will host the "Final Four" this weekend and will take on the winner of the #3 Wilkes/#6 Albright match which was postponed until Thursday.  #1 Stevenson and #4 Lebanon Valley also advanced and will face eachother Saturday at Swarthmore.

Marywood's Blancaflor, Nye and Jessica Cosentino played in their final games for the Pacers, each closing their careers on strong performances.
